Choosing a finish line case by case: Gianluca Paniz compares horizontal and vertical tooth preparation
Margin design should follow the case, not habit — that is the argument running through Horizontal and Vertical Teeth Preparation. Prosthodontist Gianluca Paniz spends nine lessons and just over five hours weighing site, patient and procedure, then shows both protocols clinically from digital planning and preparation through provisionals, definitive impression and cementation.

What you’ll be able to do
- Pick a horizontal chamfer or vertical featheredge after assessing site, patient and workflow
- Factor periodontal phenotype, hygiene and smoking into margin placement
- Plan preparations with an intraoral scanner and control reduction with depth cuts
- Use single and double retraction cords to capture subgingival margins digitally
- Brief the dental technician clearly when the margin is vertical and less defined
- Follow a standardised cementation protocol, checking contacts and internal fit
Inside the course
Three factors that decide the margin
Paniz breaks the decision into the site (existing subgingival restorations, vitality, periodontal status, abutment shade), the patient (esthetic demands, thin-scalloped or thick-flat tissue, plaque control, smoking) and the clinical steps that follow. Supra- and subgingival positions are compared for their benefits and pitfalls.
Side-by-side clinical comparison
Two long lectures contrast the protocols phase by phase: intrasulcular chamfer versus subgingival featheredge, interference with root form, invasiveness and cord use, then impressions. Horizontal margins make the impression harder, while vertical ones make lab communication harder — and he explains how digital scanning eases both.
Four cases filmed at the chair
You watch provisionalisation for veneers on 21 and 22, a combined veneer and implant crown case that also needs orthodontics, a double-cord scan of two vertically prepared premolars, and the final cementation sequence with polymerisation from buccal and palatal.
About Gianluca Paniz

Before you buy
Is the course only theory, or do I see real patients?
Five lessons are lectures and four are filmed clinical procedures, together covering preparation, provisionals, scanning and cementation.
Does Paniz favour one margin type over the other?
No — his point is that neither is universally better, and he gives criteria for choosing per tooth and per patient.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
