Mayo Clinic Critical Care Review for the NP and PA 2026 — 22 ICU lectures for advanced practice providers
Mayo Clinic Critical Care Review for the Nurse Practitioner and Physician Associate 2026 is a two-day lecture series, recorded with slides, that Mayo Clinic built for APPs caring for critically ill adults. Twenty-two sessions taught by Mayo physicians, APRNs and PAs cover shock and vasoactive support, electrolyte crises, liver failure and variceal bleeding, toxic and febrile emergencies, airways and lines, pacing and ultrasound-guided assessment of hypotension.

What you’ll be able to do
- Manage submassive PE, acute liver failure, variceal haemorrhage and the acute abdomen
- Separate cardiogenic shock, vasoplegia and anaphylaxis and choose the right drugs
- Recognise malignant hyperthermia, serotonin syndrome and NMS early
- Use bedside ultrasound to work through hypotension at the bedside
- Plan awake intubation, bronchoscopy and central access in the unstable patient
- Integrate hyperbaric oxygen, palliative care and renal replacement into ICU plans
Inside the course
Day 1: shock, organ failure and monitoring
Electrolyte emergencies, cardiogenic shock, the acute abdomen, hyperbaric oxygen, paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity, Swan-Ganz interpretation, malignant hyperthermia, submassive PE, a sonographic hypotension approach, acute liver failure and ICU palliative medicine.
Day 2: Mayo Clinic Critical Care procedures and emergencies
Awake intubation, infectious mimics, serotonin and neuroleptic malignant syndromes, variceal bleeding, vasoplegia agents, line selection, chest re-entry after cardiac surgery, pacemaker troubleshooting, VAP bundles, dialysis in the ICU and anaphylaxis.
Taught by the team, for the team
Roughly a third of the faculty are APRNs or PAs, so many sessions are framed around the decisions an APP makes on a night shift in the unit.
Built for
- Acute care nurse practitionersA compact review of adult ICU emergencies and procedures.
- Physician associates in critical careMayo protocols for shock, airway and line decisions.
- APPs moving into the ICUA foundation course before independent night cover.
