Periodontal research at the frontier — full recordings from the University of Pennsylvania’s 2023 conference on microbiome, inflammation and regeneration
Recorded in July 2023 at Penn Dental Medicine, The 6th Penn Periodontal Conference 2023 collects six sessions and roughly 12.5 hours of scientific talks. Speakers including George Hajishengallis, Francesco D’Aiuto, Cun-Yu Wang, Gary Wu, Nancy Speck and Jeff Ebersole present work on pathogen metabolism, host–microbe signalling, links with diabetes and cancer, the gut–oral axis, biofilm genetics and the cell biology of periodontal regeneration.

What you’ll be able to do
- Follow current thinking on inflammatory dysbiosis and how pathogens adapt to the host
- Explain proposed mechanisms linking periodontitis with diabetes, cardiometabolic disease and cancer
- Describe how biofilm synergy, phages and gene regulation shape virulence
- Discuss the gut–oral axis and its effect on oral health
- Understand emerging regenerative biology: scaffolds, fibroblast subtypes and single-cell transcriptomics
Inside the conference
Day one: microbiome and systemic links
The Monday morning opens with metabolic strategies of periodontal pathogens, host immune responses and early disease mechanisms. A short afternoon block turns to bone resorption, inflammatory pathways and interactions with diabetes and cancer.
Day two: microbial ecosystems
The longest session, at 3 h 24 min, examines lesser-studied bacterial groups, phage interactions, biofilm formation and the molecular switches that control virulence.
Day three: gut–oral axis and regeneration
Two Wednesday sessions move from systemic microbiomes to scaffold materials, host tissue response, collagen matrices and single-cell work, ending with early-career researchers presenting on epithelial barriers, immune signalling and metabolism in repair.
Day four
A final Thursday morning session of about two hours completes the programme; no detailed outline of its talks is available.

Will this change what I do chairside next week?
Probably not directly. These are basic and translational research talks, not clinical technique demonstrations.
How are the videos organised?
By conference half-day rather than by speaker or topic, so individual talks are not separately titled.
Is the Thursday content described?
Only its length is known; no talk list exists for that final morning.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
