Growing patients from primary dentition to adolescence — expansion, open bite, Class II appliances and growth prediction
Four orthodontists with very different backgrounds — Bakr Rabie, Marco Rosa, Chris Chang and Derek Mahony — teach Orthodontics of Children and Teenagers across nine lessons and 15 h 10 min. Expect a critical look at mixed-dentition traps, interceptive care, Herbst and MARA therapy, the 2×4 technique, impacted teeth, paediatric sleep apnoea and whether maxillary expansion is stable.

What you’ll be able to do
- Spot overtreatment risks in mixed dentition and choose the most efficient path
- Treat open bite and crowding in growing patients without extractions where possible
- Use Herbst and MARA appliances for skeletal Class II, with reactivation and usage protocols
- Run early treatment with the 2×4 technique and manage impacted teeth early
- Recognise OSA and bruxism in children and treat primary-dentition malocclusion
- Apply growth prediction to decide when and how fast to expand the maxilla
Inside the course
Thirty years of lessons from mixed dentition
A two-part opening reviews priorities, the Dunning–Kruger effect, invasive cervical root resorption and what recent evidence changed, then moves to cephalometrics, non-extraction crowding treatment, open bite and dentofacial orthopaedics, with plenty of cases.
Interception and early treatment
Growth modification devices, vertical control, elastic traction, overcorrection against relapse, serial extraction and habit appliances lead into a systematic early-treatment protocol with palatal expansion and centric relation control.
Class II biology and appliances
The Herbst lesson explains the Ihh protein, how far to advance the mandible and how to fabricate and reactivate the device. Another session compares functional, bracket, mini-implant and surgical options in young adults, and a two-hour MARA lesson covers design, indications and a step-by-step protocol.
Youngest patients and growth forecasting
Primary-dentition malocclusion, habits and childhood bruxism precede a final lesson on prediction methods and expansion: whether it works, when to start, rate and appliance choice.

Which instructor teaches which lesson?
Lessons are not attributed individually; the four teachers share the programme and each brings their own approach.
Is the evidence review current?
The opening lesson refers to evidence-based orthodontics as of 2020, so newer studies are not included.
Does the course include adults?
One lesson discusses Class II correction in young adults and the age limit for functional appliances, but children and teenagers are the focus.
