Modern Surgical Pathology Through the Expert Eyes of APSS-USCAP, Seventh Edition — six consultants on the pitfalls they see most
The USCAP Modern Surgical Pathology Through the Expert Eyes of APSS-USCAP: Seventh Edition 2026 is built on what consultant pathologists keep receiving as second opinions: the cases that still trip up capable colleagues. Six members of the Arthur Purdy Stout Society each take one organ system, showing how routine H&E and a well-chosen immunopanel resolve most dilemmas and when a molecular test is worth ordering. Released on 17 March 2026, every section pairs video lectures with supporting documents.

What you’ll be able to do
- Judge invasion in small biopsies of the lung and genitourinary tract with more confidence
- Classify inflammatory disease of the upper GI tract using consistent criteria
- Distinguish among the pulmonary neuroendocrine tumours
- Tell reactive from neoplastic change in the female genital tract
- Work through the differential of problematic breast tumours and soft tissue lesions
- Choose immunohistochemistry knowing what each stain can and cannot prove
Inside the course
Why this Modern Surgical Pathology course exists
The APSS faculty reviewed recent literature and their own consult files to find recurring practice gaps, then built each lecture around those specific error-prone scenarios.
Chest, breast and soft tissue
Natasha Rekhtman takes thoracic pathology, Laura Collins the difficult breast lesions, and Jason Hornick the soft tissue section, where marker selection often decides the diagnosis.
GI, gynaecological and GU
Rondell Graham addresses gastrointestinal problems, Anne Mills the gynaecological mimics, and Sean Williamson the genitourinary material, including invasion assessment on limited samples.
Morphology first, tests second
Across all six sections the method stays the same: look carefully, stain thoughtfully, and reserve adjunctive molecular work for the cases that genuinely need it.
Built for
- Practising surgical pathologistsA targeted refresher on the organ-system traps most likely to generate a misdiagnosis.
- Pathologists who send out consultsInsight into how expert consultants approach the cases you might forward.
- Senior residents and fellowsPitfall-centred teaching that complements standard textbook review.
