Dental sleep medicine in 12 lessons — screening for apnoea, tongue-tie and airway-first orthodontics, oral appliances
Obstructive sleep apnoea increasingly lands in the dental chair, and Apnea: diagnostics and treatment. Dental sleep medicine prepares you to recognise it and take part in its management. Seven speakers, including Soroush Zaghi, Derek Mahony, Marco Rosa, Roger Price, Eduardo Castrillon, Anna Colonna and Rajesh Raveendranathan, share 12 lessons and 10 h 10 min on breathing physiology, tongue function, children’s airway-driven orthodontics, mandibular advancement devices, bruxism and a neuromuscular approach to sleep appliances.

What you’ll be able to do
- Spot sleep-disordered breathing at a routine visit with questionnaires and red-flag findings
- Assess tongue-tie, tongue tone and tongue space with range-of-motion measures and CBCT
- Select and follow up mandibular advancement devices and weigh them against CPAP
- Plan expansion and growth modification for children with narrow maxillae
- Untangle the link between bruxism and obstructive apnoea
Inside the course
Breathing and the tongue
The course opens with normal and disturbed breathing, CO₂ measurement and the effects of stress, then spends almost two hours on ankyloglossia: its five diagnostic dimensions, Kotlow’s measurement, myofunctional therapy and where frenectomy fits.
The dentist’s role in adult apnoea
A long lesson sets out sleep-disordered breathing groups, polysomnography and polygraphy, the Baveno classification, monoblock and duoblock appliances, titratable designs, side effects and the clinical steps of making a MAD.
Airway-first work in children
Four lessons cover six exam red flags, palatal expansion for OSA, oropharyngeal exercises, bimaxillary advancement, ALF and Myobrace arch development, and a scissor-bite case linking nasal and airway anatomy to malocclusion.
Wider clinical context
Closing talks discuss why diagnosis fails, evidence for different therapies, obstruction physiology and polysomnography levels, plus ALF, MARPE and DNA appliances and TENS-based bite registration for sleep devices.
