Everyday occlusion for the general dentist — facebow, CR records, articulator mounting and the Michigan splint
Devang Patel built Occlusion in General Dental Practice for clinicians who want occlusion to stop feeling abstract. Across 17 lessons and just under ten hours he clears up the terminology, runs a full occlusal examination, applies it to restorative planning and simple TMD cases, then demonstrates facebow transfer, centric relation records with a Lucia jig or leaf gauge, mounting, and the fabrication and adjustment of a Michigan splint.

What you’ll be able to do
- Use core terms such as centric relation, RCP and curves of Spee and Wilson without confusion
- Carry out a structured occlusal examination, including guidance and non-working interferences
- Choose between a conformative and a reorganised approach when planning restorations
- Screen, classify and manage simple TMD in a general practice setting
- Record a Denar Slidematic facebow and a CR bite, then mount casts in MIP or CR
- Fit and adjust a Michigan splint and troubleshoot common problems
Inside the course
Why occlusion matters and what the words mean
The early lessons explain why so many dentists find the topic confusing, separate function from dysfunction, and define each position and curve in plain terms. A demonstrated exam then covers the joints, muscles, anterior guidance and the first point of contact found with bimanual manipulation.
From single restorations to full-mouth work
Patel shows how occlusal thinking changes treatment plans: fitting direct and indirect restorations, handling a collapsed posterior bite, altering canine guidance without opening the vertical dimension, and approaching wear cases treated adhesively or conventionally.
TMD and splint therapy in practice
A four-lesson block reviews joint anatomy, examination, the split between intracapsular and muscle disorders, and treatment a general office can offer. It closes with eight splint types, their pros and cons, and when each is indicated.
Live clinical records and lab steps
Demonstrations cover facebow registration with three materials, deprogramming and CR recording, semi-adjustable versus Automark articulators, and a complete Michigan splint fit. Devang Patel qualified in 2004 and holds an MSc with distinction from the Eastman Dental Institute.
