Predictable functional occlusion the Japanese way — Roth goals, Kuwata disclusion and a TMJ-first workflow
Predictable Functional Occlusion- Roth Philosophy, Masahiro Kuwata’s Protocols, and the TMJ-First Concept brings together five Japanese clinicians — Taiichi Maekawa, Sadao Sato, Shimpei Sonoda, Kazumi Ikeda and Satoshi Aoki — across ten lessons lasting just under eight hours. The thread running through every lesson is simple: stabilise and diagnose the joint first, then plan orthodontic or restorative occlusion from a seated condyle. Cases move from disc displacement and splint therapy through Kuwata-style occlusal adjustment to MEAW-assisted reconstruction and a closing digital workflow.

What you’ll be able to do
- Set orthodontic goals from the seated condylar position and take reliable centric relation records
- Stage disc displacement using history, mounted casts, MRI and CBCT before moving teeth
- Use a stabilisation splint ahead of and during orthodontics to secure jaw position
- Carry out trim-off and add-on occlusal adjustment built on functionally discluded occlusion
- Control occlusal plane and vertical dimension when reconstructing a full arch
Inside the course
Roth philosophy and the TMJ-First concept
The opening lessons define what the articular disc should look like and do, walk through the stages of displacement, and compare jaw position before and after treatment using MRI, CBCT and mandibular movement tracings. The effect of stabilising the mandible on growth in younger patients is also discussed.
Kuwata’s functionally discluded occlusion
Starting from Masahiro Kuwata’s first full-mouth reconstruction, two lessons separate centric relation, centric relation occlusion and intercuspal position, then explain the “Area of Centric” and why restored teeth need immediate disclusion. Step-by-step adjustment sequences for disharmony follow.
Internal derangement and the RP-ThP reference position
A gnathology-focused block links occlusal and maxillofacial development, uses arthrography to show disc–condyle derangement and asks how often orthodontic patients already have it. The reference therapeutic position is tied to posterior occlusal plane steepness and TMD risk.
From diagnosis to reconstruction
Later lessons cover skeletal pattern analysis, articulator model work and cephalometrics in analog and digital form, then pre-prosthetic orthodontics, strategic levelling and MEAW mechanics. The final lesson applies Slavicek’s sequential occlusion to a virtual articulator, digital facebow and jaw tracking.

How does this differ from the Slavicek occlusion course?
This course is built around Roth and Kuwata and treats Slavicek only in its final digital lesson. For a full grounding in Gregor Slavicek’s functional concept — Angle classes, BruxChecker, condylography and cephalometric occlusal planes — see “Occlusion in the functional concept of Slavicek” (MS-30391).
Is each lesson credited to a named lecturer?
The five Japanese speakers are named for the course as a whole, but the syllabus does not say which of them presents each lesson.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
