Why worn teeth are hard to restore, and how Frank Spear decides what to do — a five-part classic series
Five recorded parts make up SPEAR Classic Collection: Worn Dentition, in which Frank Spear works through the diagnosis and restoration of patients with tooth wear over 4 h 11 min. He covers the causes of wear, when treatment is justified, planning for bruxers, the envelope of function in severe cases and the less common pattern where posterior wear exceeds anterior wear.

What you’ll be able to do
- Understand why worn dentitions challenge even experienced restorative dentists
- Identify the causes of tooth wear and decide when intervention is warranted
- Predict whether a wear treatment is likely to succeed before you start
- Plan care for patients who grind, with the main theories on why they do
- Respect the envelope of function when restoring severe wear
- Approach cases with greater posterior than anterior wear
Inside the course
The problem and its causes
Part 1 sets out what makes these patients difficult, the ways their teeth can be changed and how the dentist chooses among them. Part 2 moves to aetiology, timing and technique, and to the signs that a plan will hold up.
Bruxism and the envelope of function
Part 3 explains how Spear plans for a confirmed grinder and reviews competing explanations of bruxism. Part 4 deals with what he considers the hardest aspect of these restorations: working within function and dysfunction when wear is severe.
Posterior-dominant wear
The short final part is devoted to patients whose back teeth are more worn than their front teeth. Spear teaches graduate prosthodontics at the University of Washington and practises esthetics and fixed prosthodontics in Seattle.

Is this new material or an older recording?
It belongs to a “classic” collection of earlier Spear lectures; the principles are enduring, but material and technology references may not be the latest.
Would it overlap with Spear’s occlusion course?
There is some shared ground on wear and bruxism with Modern Occlusion: Concepts, Diagnostics & Clinical Strategies, but this series focuses on restoring worn dentitions specifically.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
