Correcting dental, functional and skeletal asymmetry — TADs, MEAW, functional appliances, aligners and surgery compared
In Treatment of asymmetries in adults and children, six orthodontists — David Suárez Quintanilla, Jae Hyun Park, André Machado, Miguel Hirschhaut, Zafar Husanov and Matthias Peper — tackle the lopsided case from every angle over nine lessons and about 14 hours. Growing patients are treated with rapid maxillary expanders, Twin Block, the Fränkel regulator and aligners, while adults are managed with cantilevers, skeletal anchorage, MEAW wires or combined orthodontic–surgical plans.

What you’ll be able to do
- Diagnose asymmetry in three planes of space and separate dental, functional and skeletal causes
- Correct midline shifts and occlusal plane cants with cantilevers, TADs and intrusion mechanics
- Use MEAW and unilateral expansion for transverse problems
- Treat functional mandibular deviations in children with expanders, functional appliances and resin planes
- Stage asymmetric distalisation and mandibular jumps with aligners
- Decide between camouflage and orthognathic surgery, including surgery-first cases
Inside the course
Skeletal anchorage and biomechanics
The first lessons combine CBCT-guided TAD placement, condylar hyperplasia protocols and the effect of molar intrusion on the sinus and inferior alveolar nerve with a detailed biomechanics module: occlusograms, cantilevers, rhythmic wire systems, and multiloop edgewise versus straight-wire mechanics.
Orthodontic–surgical teamwork
A short introduction and a full lesson set out presurgical and postsurgical orthodontics, extraction decisions, surgery-first indications, non-surgical gummy smile correction and the division of work between surgeon and orthodontist. A later lesson returns to the question of acceptable versus perfect symmetry and compares simple mechanics, skeletal anchorage and surgery on real cases.
Growing patients
Two lessons focus on children: aetiology by age, Gummetal wire, McNamara, Marco Rosa and Lantierri expanders, low-friction straight arch, intermaxillary elastics and early aligner use. They close with ten guiding principles for asymmetric growth and eruption control.
Aligners and the smile
An aligner-specific lesson covers staging for one-sided distalisation, mandibular jump simulation and technician communication. The finale uses smile templates to diagnose dental, gingival and buccal corridor asymmetries and explains bracket positioning and diastema closure.

Before you buy
Is there repetition between lessons?
Yes — the 35-minute introductory lesson on surgical-orthodontic treatment previews the same topics that the following full lesson develops in depth.
How much of it is about aligners?
One full lesson is dedicated to aligner staging and simulation, and aligners in children appear within a second lesson; the rest relies on fixed, functional and surgical approaches.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
