Istvan Urban on rebuilding deficient ridges — vertical and horizontal bone grafting, complications and soft-tissue repair
Written by Istvan Urban, Vertical and Horizontal Ridge Augmentation is a 372-page Quintessence title from 2017 on regenerating bone for implants. Beyond the grafting itself, it tackles healing complications, infection, nerve injury and late biological problems, then turns to mucogingival surgery on the augmented ridge and to growth factors such as rhPDGF and BMPs.

Clinical gains
- Plan and perform vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation
- Recognise and manage healing complications and postoperative infection
- Reduce and handle nerve injuries linked to grafting surgery
- Restore keratinised tissue with mucogingival surgery after augmentation
- Judge the role of rhPDGF and bone morphogenetic proteins
Key sections
When augmentation goes wrong
Dedicated chapters examine complications during healing, infections after surgery, nerve damage and biological issues that surface years after implant placement, each backed by clinical evaluation and example cases.
Soft tissue on a rebuilt ridge
Urban presents fresh approaches to vestibular and keratinised-tissue reconstruction once bone has been gained, including a palatal flap that lateralises the nasopalatine nerve.
Biologics in regeneration
The final part reviews recombinant platelet-derived growth factor and BMPs, summarising what research shows and how the findings translate to surgery.
