Make your own implant surgical guides — scanning, planning in Blue Sky Plan and in-office 3D printing with Nate Farley
Prosthodontist Nate Farley wrote his master’s thesis on the accuracy of CAD/CAM guides, and in Basic Surgical Guides he shows beginners how to produce them in-house. Twenty-one lessons in six modules (5 h 14 min) take you from intraoral scans and better CBCTs through file alignment, implant positioning and guide design in the free Blue Sky Plan software, to printing, cleaning, curing and finishing.

What you’ll be able to do
- Capture usable intraoral scans and CBCT data for implant planning
- Align STL and DICOM files and position implants in Blue Sky Plan
- Design both tooth-supported and edentulous guides
- Reduce metal scatter and extract teeth digitally in Meshmixer
- Send guides to Asiga and Formlabs Form 2 printers, then clean, cure and finish them
Inside the course
Records first
After a three-minute introduction, a short module covers scanning with a TRIOS scanner and practical tricks for cleaner cone-beam scans.
Design, the heart of the course
Almost three hours walk through the software interface, file alignment, case setup, implant placement and guide creation, with separate lessons on edentulous guides, scatter from restorations and digital extraction in Meshmixer.
Printing and a complete case
Half an hour compares two resin printers and the post-processing steps. A 72-minute case then plans two implants from a Meshmixer wax-up to a finished guide, and a brief FAQ module discusses guide support and whether metal sleeves are necessary.

Before you buy
Will it help with full-arch or stackable guides?
No. The scope is deliberately basic: single and multiple tooth-supported guides plus a simple edentulous guide.
Do I need specific hardware to follow along?
The demonstrations use a TRIOS scanner and Asiga and Form 2 printers, but the planning software is free and the principles carry over to other equipment.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
