TMD diagnosis and conservative care by the evidence — five experts, 14 hours, from DC/TMD criteria to splint pre-treatment
With Jeffrey Okeson, Ambra Michelotti, Gary Klasser, Ulrich Lotzmann and Lawrence Gottesman on the faculty, Evidence-Based Treatment of TMJ Dysfunction gives 14 h 13 min across eight lectures to temporomandibular disorders. It covers risk factors, structured examination, muscle versus joint pain, the DC/TMD classification, stepwise conservative treatment, links with systemic disease, instrumental functional analysis and occlusal splints.

What you’ll be able to do
- Run a standardised TMD examination: history, palpation, provocation tests and jaw movement
- Tell the pain site from the pain source and spot referred or cardiac jaw pain
- Classify cases with RDC, DC and extended DC/TMD criteria
- Build a stepwise conservative plan with self-care, exercises and behavioural therapy
- Choose the right occlusal splint type and know when it is not indicated
Inside the course
Pain concepts and the clinical exam
The first lectures define musculoskeletal dysfunction, introduce the biopsychosocial model and neuromatrix theory, and separate predisposing, initiating and perpetuating factors. A detailed examination sequence follows, from otoscopy and cervical range of motion to lymph nodes, imaging, blood tests and diagnostic anaesthesia.
Muscles, joints and evidence-based criteria
Local soreness, myospasm, myofascial pain and fibromyalgia are set against disc displacement with and without reduction, inflammatory disease and osteoarthritis. Michelotti’s session places occlusion and trauma among the risk factors and explains the SMILES approach and MRI use.
Treatment and wider medicine
Patient-oriented care covers self-massage, parafunction control, physiotherapy, disc reduction, dislocation and the placebo effect of splints. A separate lecture looks at small-fibre neuropathy, joint hypermobility, Chiari malformation and paraneoplastic pain.
Functional analysis and splints
Lotzmann’s long session shows three-dimensional jaw tracking, palpation, joint sounds and disc repositioning; the last lecture compares reflex, stabilisation, repositioning, distraction and other splints alongside selective grinding and manual therapy.

Curriculum
Before you buy
I already own the Okeson TMJ and occlusion toolkit — is this different?
Okeson is one of five lecturers here, and the other four contribute most of the content, but diagnosis and splint themes naturally overlap with his longer course.
How much time does each lecture take?
Between 58 minutes and 2 h 52 min; the functional diagnostics session is the longest, the introduction the shortest.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
