Implant overdentures from exam to recall — Michael Scherer on attachments, CBCT denture-down planning, bars and Locators
Prosthodontist Michael D. Scherer of Loma Linda University teaches the full overdenture pathway in Fast Track Full-Arch Dentistry: Implant Overdentures. Five modules and 29 lessons, about 11 h 20 min in total, cover patient assessment, attachment selection and restorative space, implant number and position, radiographic guides and CBCT scanning, surgical set-up, and restoration with bars, Locator and Locator R-Tx attachments, followed by recall and hygiene.

What you’ll be able to do
- Examine edentulous patients and pick suitable full-arch cases
- Measure restorative space inside the denture before choosing an attachment
- Decide the number and location of implants for upper and lower overdentures
- Reline a denture with radiopaque PVS or barium and run a denture-down CBCT workflow
- Restore and maintain bar, Locator and Locator R-Tx overdentures
Inside the course
Edentulism and case selection
Scherer opens with the history and consequences of complete tooth loss, then walks through examination, core planning concepts, communication with full-arch patients and strategies for choosing cases.
Attachments, biomechanics and implant choice
The second module compares contemporary attachment systems, explains how overdentures load implants, and covers implant design, osseointegration, bone needs, diameter and length. It closes by asking whether immediate loading of overdentures holds up.
Imaging and surgery
Periapical, panoramic and cone-beam options are contrasted, with practical demonstrations of making a radiopaque guide, preparing soft-tissue separation scans, exporting DICOM files and relining the denture for scanning. A shorter surgical module reviews anatomy, instruments, equipment and essential placement procedures.
Restoration and long-term care
The longest module, at 3 h 24 min, goes step by step through bar, Locator and Locator R-Tx restorations, then sets out recall intervals and implant hygiene protocols.
