Ceramic restorations guided by nature and art — Jean-François Lasserre’s two-volume study of form, face and smile
Across 790 pages in two volumes, Fusion: Art and Nature in Ceramic Restorations: 2-Volume Set by Jean-François Lasserre (Quintessence, 2024) examines how esthetics and function meet in ceramic work. It covers mimetic and bionic principles, the morphology of natural teeth, VisagiSmile virtual smile design, anthropometric rules for the face and smile, and neuroscience findings on self-recognition and facial asymmetry.

Inside the book
Learning from natural teeth
Lasserre grounds ceramic work in the detailed study of natural anatomy, treating shape as a three-part system and describing exaggerated forms that make restorations read as lifelike.
The face comes first
Clinical examples show how facial measurements and virtual design shape each smile, while research on how people perceive their own faces explains why asymmetry matters.
Art in the laboratory and clinic
The later material focuses on composition and equilibrium, aiming for restorations that combine visual harmony with scientific accuracy.
