From general dentist to orofacial pain clinician — triage, treatment algorithms and TMD cases with Steven Bender
Steven Bender directs the Clinical Center for Facial Pain and Sleep Medicine at Texas A&M and once served as president of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. Orofacial Pain Academy Channel gathers seven lectures, 4 h 46 min in total, arranged as an orofacial pain season and a temporomandibular disorders season. Together they show how a dentist can recognise non-dental pain, sort patients by urgency, follow decision trees and apply current TMD thinking to real cases.

What you’ll be able to do
- Recognise the red flags that call for urgent referral
- Separate odontogenic from non-odontogenic pain, and muscle, joint and neuropathic sources
- Use stepwise treatment algorithms to choose, combine or escalate therapy
- Apply updated TMD classification and diagnostic criteria
- Understand why modern pain science has moved beyond purely occlusion-based gnathology
Inside the course
Changing the lens
The opening lectures describe what knowledge, skills and mindset a general dentist needs to add pain care, and trace the historical shift from articulation and jaw mechanics to a biopsychosocial model that still integrates joint, muscle and occlusal findings.
Decisions and triage
Decision trees compare conservative, pharmacological and procedural options by diagnosis and patient profile. The triage lecture explains how to screen, rule out serious disease and decide who can stay in general practice.
TMD now, and in real patients
A review of TMD epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiology and emerging evidence from imaging and biomarkers is followed by two case sessions covering muscular, articular and mixed presentations, failures and the grey zones between diagnoses.
Built for
- General dentists seeing unexplained facial painA safe framework for what to treat and what to refer.
- Clinicians trained in classic gnathologyAn update on how pain science changes TMD care.
- Anyone considering orofacial pain as a focusAn honest picture of the skills that path requires.

Before you buy
Are neuropathic pain, burning mouth and headache covered in detail?
The season overview mentions them, but none of the seven lectures is dedicated to those conditions; the lectures focus on triage, algorithms and TMD.
Is Bender the only speaker?
He is named as the coordinator and instructor; individual lecturers are not credited per lesson.
Is it hands-on?
No, it is a set of recorded lectures with case discussion, suited to building diagnostic reasoning.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
