Michael Bergler on virtual treatment planning — building the 3D patient and designing tooth-supported restorations
In PENN Virtual Treatment Planning: Let Technology work for you, University of Pennsylvania master technician Michael Bergler shows how a fully digital pathway replaces guesswork in restorative work. Across four lessons and roughly four and a half hours, he moves from assembling a 3D patient and capturing the right data, to virtual wax-up design and its transfer into finished tooth-supported restorations.

What you’ll be able to do
- Assemble a 3D patient from laboratory, intraoral and face scans
- Match different scan types and DICOM data in correct 3D orientation
- Design a virtual wax-up for tooth-supported restorations
- Transfer the digital design into final restorations with the right materials
- Judge where a fully digital workflow beats a combined analogue approach
Inside the course
Creating the 3D patient
The first lesson frames virtual planning as a whole — the growth of CAD/CAM software, face scans for aesthetics, digital wax-ups, extraction tools and soft-tissue morphing that streamline the case before any hands touch it.
Data acquisition
Optical and tactile scanners, intraoral scanning pitfalls, and the integration of face and CBCT data, with 3D orientation as the key to matching scans for planning.
Design and delivery
Two lessons build the virtual wax-up — shells, preparations, veneers, file types — then implement it through milling, 3D printing, ceramic printing and material choice for complex full-mouth cases.
About Michael Bergler
A master dental technician trained in Germany and Japan, he co-founded Pennsylvania’s CAD/CAM Ceramic Center and publishes widely on restorative materials and digital technology.
