Diagnose arches and jaws separately — the Andrews Six Elements philosophy taught by its authors
Lawrence F. Andrews, who described the Six Keys to Optimal Occlusion and invented the Straight-Wire Appliance, presents The 6 Elements of Orofacial Harmony together with his son Will A. Andrews. In four lectures lasting 7 h 48 min in total, they explain a three-dimensional diagnostic system that sets goals for individual arches first, then for jaw and chin positions, and link it to bracket selection, bracket siting and force systems.

What you’ll be able to do
- Set defensible treatment goals for teeth, arches and jaws
- Classify arches rather than malocclusions and judge jaw widths
- Calculate the Interim Core Discrepancy to decide extraction versus non-extraction
- Select and site Straight-Wire and translation brackets and plan force systems
- Diagnose jaw and chin positions in three dimensions and choose orthopedics or surgery
Inside the course
Where the Six Elements came from
The introduction reviews the state of the specialty, the Six Keys and the Straight-Wire Appliance, and explains how decades of research at the Andrews Foundation led to goals meant to be both optimal and universal.
Elements I and III: the individual arch
Optimal arch characteristics, incisor positions compatible with health and esthetics, and a method for measuring skeletal width discrepancies are presented as part of arch diagnosis. The ICD then determines which arches need extractions.
Treating the arch
Aligning, levelling, width, shape and length are handled stage by stage, with attention to bracket design, bracket sets, archwire sequence and the forces needed to correct arch length.
Elements II to V: jaws and chin
New targets for anteroposterior position, width, height and chin prominence feed a positional classification of the jaws, followed by the realistic limits of growth modification.
Built for
- Orthodontists using pre-adjusted appliancesThe reasoning behind the prescription you bond, from the man who designed it.
- Postgraduate residentsA goal-based alternative to Angle-centred diagnosis for comparison with their programme.

Before you buy
Is this a lecture series or a clinical technique course?
It is four long lectures on diagnostic philosophy and treatment planning; bracket and force-system choices are covered, but there are no step-by-step chairside demonstrations described.
Do I need to use Andrews brackets to benefit?
No — the diagnostic goals apply to any appliance, although the arch treatment lecture discusses Straight-Wire and translation bracket designs specifically.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
