A five-day, 38-hour OMFS update and board review — from dentoalveolar surgery to trauma, tumours and TMJ
Recorded as the 2023 update and review course, The Denver Comprehensive Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery packs the full scope of the specialty into 25 case-based lectures over five days. Ten faculty members — among them Robert E. Marx, Timothy A. Turvey, Richard A. Kraut, Stanley Liu and Joseph McCain — cover anaesthesia, implants and grafting, orthognathic and cleft surgery, sleep apnoea, oncology, pathology, infections, medicine, TMJ disorders and facial fractures.

- Refresh standards for office and OR anaesthesia, monitoring and recovery

- Stage and manage oral cancer, odontogenic tumours and salivary gland disease
- Treat mandibular, midface and Le Fort fractures and associated soft tissue injuries
Inside the course
Days 1 and 2: office surgery to elective reconstruction
Dentoalveolar technique and complications, anaesthesia agents, implant indications and failures, and autogenous versus tissue-engineered bone grafts open the programme. Day 2 turns to orthognathic planning, cleft lip and palate timing, facial cosmetic procedures and surgical options for obstructive sleep apnoea.
Day 3: pathology and oncology
Seven lectures, some in two parts, address biopsy, staging, resection and adjuvant therapy for oral cancer and sarcoma, odontogenic cysts and tumours, salivary neoplasms and fibro-osseous lesions.
Days 4 and 5: reconstruction, medicine, TMJ and trauma
Microvascular and microneural reconstruction, fascial space infections and medical emergencies precede two TMJ sessions on imaging and patient selection. A five-part trauma block ends the course.
The faculty
Marx pioneered clinical use of platelet-rich plasma and rhBMP; Turvey has four decades of cleft and craniofacial surgery; Liu directs Stanford’s sleep surgery fellowship; McCain leads endoscopic TMJ work at Harvard; Greer, Hanna, Kraut, Sawisch, Patel and Jundt complete the panel.
