Where orthodontics meets surgery, gnathology and pain care — Class II and III, occlusal plane and paediatric TMD
An orthodontist, a prosthodontist, a gnathologist, a dental technician and an orofacial pain specialist share the teaching in The Interdisciplinary Orthodontist: Class II & III Management, Occlusion, and Pain. Across 5 modules, 19 lessons and 12 h 54 min, Alexandre Bottrel, Brijesh Chandwani, Stanislav Blum, Jürgen Wahlmann and Zeynep Serpil Gönen cover evidence on Class III camouflage, orthodontic–orthognathic teamwork, occlusal plane design, occlusal-compass wax-ups and orofacial pain in young patients.

What you’ll be able to do
- Weigh current evidence on skeletal Class III management, from interception to adult camouflage
- Plan decompensation, surgery and finishing together with the maxillofacial surgeon
- Analyse and set the occlusal plane using the Ala-Tragus line and natural head position
- Guide the lab with occlusal compass wax-ups and the Natural Wax Technique
- Separate orthodontic tooth soreness from TMD and orofacial pain in children
- Choose and use splints safely during active tooth movement
Inside the course
Class III under the microscope
Absolute anchorage, loop mechanics and occlusal reconfiguration have widened treatment options; the first module asks which of them last. It also introduces a dentist–technician diagnostic framework built on patient goals and functional prognosis, and ends with a short atlas of paediatric orofacial pain.
Surgery as part of the plan
The longest module, almost four hours, deals with recognising skeletal discrepancies, building orthognathic treatment plans and coordinating with the surgeon in both Class II and Class III cases, including Le Fort I and mandibular osteotomy protocols.
Occlusal plane and functional wax-up
Growth patterns, Angle’s classification and the Plane system of MDT Udo Plaster lead into prosthetic phases. The laboratory module teaches reading functional wear, designing static and dynamic wax-ups with the occlusal compass, and articulator records that protect anterior guidance.
Pain in the orthodontic clinic
The final module looks at how often children present with TMD, headache and sleep problems, how to select orthotic jaw devices, and when orthodontic treatment can itself help reduce pain.
Built for
