Daniel Melker’s periodontal surgery protocols — flap design, grafting, crown lengthening and suturing in 16 lessons
Taught by Daniel Melker, a lecturer in several US graduate periodontics and prosthodontics programmes and co-author of the Biologic Shaping chapters in current textbooks, Advanced Periodontology, Surgical Protocols runs 11 hours over 16 case-based lessons. It follows periodontal surgery from scalpel choice and flap reflection through crown lengthening, gummy smile correction, soft tissue grafting and root surface treatment to the restorative stage.

What you’ll be able to do
- Design full- and split-thickness flaps in anterior, posterior and lingual sites
- Plan crown lengthening by reading the underlying bone rather than relying on measurements alone
- Treat gummy smile, altered passive eruption and frena, including guided gingivectomy
- Harvest connective tissue from the palate and tuberosity and weigh allograft alternatives
- Choose suture materials and techniques that hold the flap where you want it
- Manage root surface irregularities, subgingival margins and furcation areas before crowns
Inside the course
Biology first
Melker opens by arguing for generous flaps that protect blood supply and give real access to bone, and shows successful and failed cases to illustrate how inflammation and poor design cause relapse. Step-by-step incision and reflection protocols follow.
Esthetic zone and crown lengthening
Lessons on anterior surgery and crown lengthening focus on anatomy — exostoses, bone excess and tooth form — and on techniques that preserve tissue while giving natural-looking results.
Grafting and suturing
Two lessons on suturing cover instruments, needle handling and case examples. Four more compare palatal, tuberosity and allograft tissue, with a preference for simple, proven connective tissue techniques and long-term graft follow-up.
The restorative interface
The final lessons deal with cores and provisionals, conservative treatment of root defects, margin placement and the damage that subgingival crowns can do around furcations.

Are the lessons structured lectures?
They are largely discussion-style presentations built around the author’s clinical cases, with his opinions on which techniques work and which he avoids.
What are the “Surgery V” lessons?
Three lessons carry generic titles; their content deals with bone preservation, margin design, inflammation around restorations and crown placement near furcations.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
