From intraoral scan to printed appliance — a practical digital orthodontics workflow with CAD, milling and aligners
In five lessons lasting 8 h 40 min, Going Digital: Modern Orthodontics brings together orthodontists Nearchos Panayi and Daniel Souza Pinto Ramos with digital lab pioneer Stefano Negrini. They show how to set up a digital practice, design expanders, functional appliances and retainers in CAD, decide between milling and printing, and plan face-driven aligner and interdisciplinary treatment.

What you’ll be able to do
- Judge when CBCT or MRI really adds value to an orthodontic diagnosis
- Design appliances and aligners in Meshmixer, 3Shape and 3DLeone
- Choose between milling and 3D printing and the right materials for each device
- Build digital RPEs, Herbst, Twin Block, Carriere and retainer designs
- Plan interdisciplinary cases with digital smile design and standard photo protocols
- Run aligner therapy guided by facial analysis, including complex malocclusions
Inside the course
Setting up a digital office
Panayi explains stereolithography versus extrusion printing, the full scan-to-appliance chain, current AI uses, direct and indirect bonding, custom brackets, robotic wire bending and 3D-planned lingual and labial fixed appliances.
Laboratory design of fixed and removable devices
Negrini compares 2D and 3D evaluation, walks through a Modified Zero Expander 3 protocol, and then designs palatal expanders, Herbst and Twin Block appliances step by step with practical fabrication advice.
Face-driven planning and aligners
Souza Pinto Ramos covers the orthodontist’s role in multidisciplinary cases, DSD and when a 3D smile design is justified, patient presentation, the biology of aligner movement, microperforations, VPRO and the basics of orthognathic planning.
