Pediatric oral surgery basics: reading panoramic images, atraumatic extractions, dentofacial trauma and root resorption
Four specialists — endodontist Paul Abbott, pediatric dentist Ghassem Ansari, radiologist Johan Aps and oral surgeon Michael V. Joachim — teach Oral Surgery Essentials for the Pediatric Dental Patient in seven lessons lasting 7 h 50 min. The course moves from radiographic pitfalls and extraction technique to injuries of the teeth, jaws and soft tissues in children and the resorption that can follow.

What you’ll be able to do
- Recognise ghost images, carotid calcifications and incidental findings on panoramic and CBCT scans
- Carry out minimally traumatic extractions with sound positioning, flap design and socket care
- Grade third molar difficulty and decide when a CBCT is justified beforehand
- Assess and treat luxation, avulsion and alveolar fractures in primary and permanent teeth
- Prevent and manage external and internal root resorption after trauma
Inside the course
Imaging you can trust
The opening lesson catalogues panoramic blind spots and look-alike findings — nasopalatine and simple bone cysts, sialography of salivary disease, ossified ligaments in the spine and Eagle syndrome — so that normal anatomy is not mistaken for pathology.
Extraction technique
A short introduction and a longer follow-up lesson explain when to extract, the three biomechanical principles behind forceps and elevators, transalveolar access, when a root tip may stay, wisdom tooth sequencing, bleeding control and postoperative pain relief.
Children’s dentofacial injuries
Causes, classification and examination lead into treatment of injuries to primary and permanent teeth, replanting avulsed teeth, splinting criteria, soft tissue repair and pediatric facial fractures. A separate emergency lesson adds trauma classification, laser Doppler vitality testing, discoloration and drug therapy.
Resorption after trauma
Two final lessons explain the resorption triad, replacement resorption, storage media for avulsed teeth, extraoral root canal treatment and the long-term outlook for internal resorption.
