Regenerating deep infrabony defects while rebuilding the papilla — Zucchelli’s mucogingival approach in one sitting
Giovanni Zucchelli and Martina Stefanini of the University of Bologna lead Papilla Preservation & Regeneration: Techniques for Infrabony Defects, an 11-lesson, 8 h 43 min course for periodontists already doing regenerative surgery. It shows how to correct poor soft tissue morphology and treat severe vertical defects in the same operation, using MIST, Modified MIST, the tunnel, the coronally advanced flap and the Connective Tissue Graft Wall Technique.

What you’ll be able to do
- Judge the regenerative potential of a vertical defect and decide between regeneration and extraction
- Read soft tissue prognostic factors — papilla height, isthmus width, keratinised tissue and supracrestal volume
- Choose between MIST, Modified MIST and a mucogingival flap from the defect morphology
- Use a connective tissue graft as a wall that stabilises and shields the clot
- Gain radiographic fill and new attachment on teeth with doubtful prognosis
Inside the course
Biology first
The opening lessons contrast classic regeneration with the mucogingival method, explain why the supracrestal tissue drives the choice of access, and set out the three conditions for regeneration: space, a stable clot, and primary closure of the soft tissues over it.
Countermeasures for unfavourable tissue
Martina Stefanini details soft tissue prognosis and degranulation; Zucchelli then shows what to do when keratinised tissue is missing, the isthmus is narrow or there is no supracrestal tissue, including the combined Wall Technique and coronally advanced flap.
Six surgical cases
Recorded cases cover a purely regenerative MIST procedure, a full-thickness tunnel under a shortened papilla, a lower-incisor CAF with amelogenins, a deep canine defect with a missing buccal wall, a bisected palatal flap in the upper arch, and a severe periodontitis patient treated to avoid post-operative esthetic loss.
The instructors
Zucchelli is Professor of Periodontology at Bologna and author of the widely translated Quintessence title Mucogingival Esthetic Surgery. Stefanini is a Bologna researcher, ITI Fellow and practising periodontal surgeon.
Built for
- Periodontists doing regenerationAdds the soft tissue dimension that often decides whether a deep defect heals.
- Surgeons treating the esthetic zoneTechniques aimed at keeping the papilla where the patient can see it.
- Postgraduate residentsStep-by-step surgical footage to link the biology with flap design.

Before you buy
Is this suitable if I have never done periodontal regeneration?
It is pitched at clinicians who already perform regenerative therapy and want to add soft tissue management to it.
Why do most lessons lack a formal title?
Only three lessons carry original titles; the others are named here by their clinical topic or case for easier navigation.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
