The Japanese functional approach to hard cases — open bite, TMD and TAD mechanics in 8 evidence-led lessons
Four figures shaping Japanese orthodontics — Sadao Sato, Satoshi Aoki, Masamitsu Takahashi and Takao Minamidate — teach Practical Advanced Orthodontics. Evidence-Based Approaches from Japan’s Leading Experts, a 5-hour set of eight lessons. It centres on a diagnosis-first philosophy that treats jaw function and occlusal vertical dimension as the starting point, then applies it to open bite, Class 2 and Class 3 correction with aligners and skeletal anchorage.

What you’ll be able to do
- Treat demanding open bite cases without extraction or surgery
- Read malocclusion through occlusal plane and vertical dimension changes
- Address orthodontic problems alongside temporomandibular joint disorders
- Run structured Class 2 aligner protocols, with and without premolar extractions
- Use TADs for precise vertical control and gummy smile management
- Apply skeletal anchorage to full-arch distalization and Class 3 cases
Inside the course
A functional diagnosis framework
Early lessons define craniomandibular orthodontics, the etiology of malocclusion, and how the mandible adapts to shifts in occlusal plane and vertical dimension. Examination methods weigh jaw function and TMD symptoms before any mechanics are chosen.
Non-extraction, non-surgical open bite
Sato’s published protocols address posterior discrepancy in Class 1 open bite, the case for and against premolar extraction, and the link between occlusal plane inclination and mandibular change, supported by clinical analysis.
Aligners and TADs in complex cases
Later lessons stage Class 2 aligner treatment, sequential distalization and mandibular advancement, then move to TAD biomechanics for vertical control, bimaxillary protrusion, open bite and buccal-shelf Class 3 correction.
Who is teaching
The faculty includes long-standing members of the Angle Society and the American Board of Orthodontics, MEAW and CADIAX specialists, and a certified expert of the European Board of Aligner Orthodontics.
Built for
- Orthodontists with difficult open bitesA functional, extraction-sparing route backed by published work.
- Clinicians managing TMDTreatment that reconciles occlusion with joint health.
- TAD and aligner usersConcrete vertical-control and anchorage protocols for Class 2 and 3.

Before you buy
Is the material aligner-focused or fixed-appliance?
Both. Several lessons cover aligner protocols for Class 2, while others use MEAW mechanics and TADs with fixed appliances.
Does it assume knowledge of the Sato philosophy?
No prior study is required, but the course is pitched at experienced clinicians treating complex, functional cases.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
