Leonardo Trombelli’s Single Flap Approach — simpler regeneration of deep intrabony defects, from probing to suture
Periodontal regeneration does not have to be complicated, argues Leonardo Trombelli of the University of Ferrara in The Single Flap Approach: Regenerative Procedure Selection. Across 10 lessons and 5 h 8 min he shows how raising one buccal or oral flap, and leaving the other side untouched, gives access to most deep infrabony defects, and when to add a membrane, enamel matrix derivative, a bone graft or connective tissue.

What you’ll be able to do
- Fit regenerative surgery into an overall plan for severe periodontitis
- Read defect morphology and soft tissue by pre-surgical probing to choose the flap
- Design the single flap, debride the root and degranulate the defect
- Select sutures for tension-free primary closure and manage the post-op phase
- Decide between GTR membranes, EMD and the sandwich technique case by case
- Limit post-surgical recession in aesthetic zones
Inside the course
Why one flap is enough
Trombelli starts with the goals and long-term predictability of regeneration, then compares wound stability after single-sided access with double-sided papilla preservation flaps. Patient and defect features that favour regeneration are set out early.
The surgery, step by step
Lessons on incision design for single or multiple defects in front and back teeth, instrumentation with hand, ultrasonic and rotary tools, and suture selection by tissue morphology form the practical core.
Choosing the regenerative material
Separate sessions weigh the clinical and histological evidence for membranes with or without bone substitute, for enamel matrix derivative alone, and for EMD combined with autogenous bone or substitute. A short closing lesson turns it all into a decision algorithm.
About Leonardo Trombelli
He chairs periodontology at Ferrara, has been dean of its dental school since 2013, is a past president of the Italian Society of Oral Surgery and Implantology, and sits on the Journal of Clinical Periodontology editorial board.

Does it also cover combining SFA with connective tissue grafts?
Yes, for aesthetic cases; the final algorithm lesson explains when extra bone or soft tissue grafts are warranted.
Is it limited to one type of defect?
No. The approach is presented as usable for deep intrabony lesions of any severity, wall count or position.
Do I get CME credit or a certificate?
No. Clinicapedia provides the educational content only — no CME or CE credits, MOC points or certificates of completion are included with this product.
