Zygomatic implants start to finish: instruments, ZAGA planning, skull-model and cadaver practice, live patients and complications
Prosthodontist Ivan Chicchon and oral surgeon Arshiya Sharafi teach the Zygomatic implant course as 45 short lessons across eight modules, about 5 h 16 min in all. You move from the surgical kit and imaging classifications to osteotomy technique, quad-zygoma work on a benchtop skull, cadaver dissection including the buccal fat pad, recorded patient surgery and an eleven-part review of what can go wrong.

What you’ll be able to do
- Assemble the instruments, handpiece, burs and surgical kit a zygoma case needs
- Classify cases on radiographs and plan using the ZAGA concept
- Choose an osteotomy technique and follow the surgical sequence for single and quad zygoma
- Raise the flap and use the buccal fat pad, with anatomy reviewed on a cadaver
- Prevent and manage orbital invasion, oroantral fistula, sinusitis and nerve injury
- Judge outcomes against clear success criteria
Inside the course
Set-up and theory
After a short welcome, the instructors lay out materials and the operatory set-up, then spend nearly an hour and a half on classifications, X-ray review, closure, planning and osteotomy options, with Q&A segments on anatomy and ZAGA.
Practising the drill path
A benchtop skull shows quad-zygoma and single-zygoma placement before a cadaver module covers site preparation, insertion, flap design, buccal fat pad handling and the Weber-Ferguson approach.
Real patients and real problems
Patient footage follows, including a bonus pterygoid placement. The complications module deals with the orbit, fistulae, overlong apices, soft tissue dehiscence, sinus infection, trismus and joint inflammation, possible fractures and the zygomaticofacial nerve.
The instructors
Chicchon is a surgically trained prosthodontist in Northern California who trained at Dugoni and the University of Michigan. Sharafi completed oral and maxillofacial surgery training at the University of Maryland and the Shock Trauma Center.
