Treating periodontitis stage by stage — S3 guidelines, lasers, host modulation and regenerative surgery
Seven lectures and 11 h 44 min in Periodontitis: surgical and non-surgical treatment methods bring together Mariano Sanz, Marisa Roncati, Roberto Rossi, Eduardo Montero, Elena Calciolari and Vanya Lipcheva. They work through the European S3 clinical guideline for stages I–III, adjunctive host modulators, diode laser protocols, intrabony defect regeneration and the complex stage IV patient who needs orthodontics and implants.

What you’ll be able to do
- Apply the four-step S3 treatment sequence from hygiene to maintenance
- Decide between subgingival instrumentation and flap surgery for a given site
- Weigh the evidence for host modulators such as low-dose doxycycline, statins and omega-3
- Run a diode laser protocol for stage III disease and peri-implant mucositis
- Regenerate one-, two- and three-wall intrabony defects with suitable flaps and grafts
- Plan care for stage IV periodontitis with pathological tooth migration
Inside the course
Guidelines and the non-surgical phase
An hour-long introduction and a two-hour guideline lecture set out goals for each therapy stage: risk-factor control for smokers and diabetics, full-mouth disinfection, hand versus ultrasonic instruments, and when systemic or local antibiotics are justified. A separate lesson covers calculus detection, laser science, Square therapy and even the economics of lasers.
Modulating the host response
Starting from polymicrobial synergy and dysbiosis, this lecture reviews local statins, bisphosphonates and metformin, sub-antimicrobial doxycycline, NSAIDs, probiotics, micronutrients and omega-3 fatty acids as adjuncts to instrumentation.
Surgery for bony defects
Two regenerative lectures cover papilla-preserving and double flaps, incisions in the interproximal zone, suturing, wound healing, GTR biology, resorbable versus non-resorbable materials and an aggressive-periodontitis case in a young patient.
The advanced case
The final hour defines stage IV disease and shows how intrusion, orthodontic movement and implant prosthetics fit into one plan.
